Funds raised from Hot Holiday Homes this year support the Oliver ‘Making Memories’ event for youth otherwise unable to attend this holiday tradition. This exclusive community event is performed and co-sponsored by Actors Studio. By working with local organizations such as The Bridge Youth and Family Services, Okanagan Boys & Girls Clubs, Cops for Kids, and Families in Touch, every seat in the theatre will be filled with children and families who could not normally attend this Christmas classic. With the support of Hot Holiday Homes tour guests and donors, every child in attendance at ‘Making Memories’ will receive a stocking brimming with small gifts and treats. For some, this is the only Christmas gift they will receive.
Helping to make memories and fill the stockings for local children are another group of Kelowna kids. The ‘We Love Lucy Society’, a local non-profit organization providing assistance to Lucy Long, a 17 year-old Kelowna girl with Down Syndrome are sharing their sewing talents and providing 150 custom-made beanbags that are not only great for developing motor skills in the younger children, they are also a fun addition to game play. Fabricland has generously donated the fabric to make the beanbags.
Kelowna’s Disney Club Penguin has supported Making Memories for 6 years with a gift that always lights up the faces of the kids. This year, a six-month membership and sketch books will expose the kids to problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork in a safe environment.
Buttons are always popular, and a local 10 year old, Jesse Murray is making sure every stocking has a button personally created by him. Involved with ‘Making Memories’ since a young age, his home business Jesse Beaner’s Button Business is working overtime making buttons for each child attending ‘Making Memories’.
The stockings will also contain freshly baked cookies thanks to Okanagan College Pastry Arts Students.
And thanks to our supporters and Kelowna City Transit, these special ‘Making Memories’ guests can travel to and from the theatre for free.
The support of the Hot Holiday Homes tour, Actors Studio and many community supporters will make this Christmas season very bright for 150 Kelowna area young people. ‘Making Memories’ takes place at Kelowna Actors Studio on Sunday, December 14th at 1 pm for invited guests.
